Do you like chess? Did you know that chess was developed from an Indian game - Chaturanga - around the year 600 AD? It slowly spread throughout both Europe and Asia over time, and the chess that we play today came into life around the 1500s.

Here at Newton, we are fortunate to have a well-run Chess Club which allows many like minded students (and staff - Mr Jacob and myself are both regulars!) to come together twice a week to share our common passion for chess and play against each other. I started playing chess many years ago when I was a child back in England, and have recently resumed playing it here in Thailand thanks to the Newton Chess Club.

Large congratulations must go to both N’Mac (Napat Limpornchaicharoen) and N’Matt (Tapakorn Oonsaengchan), for their excellent initiative and leadership in running Chess Club. N’Mac is the proud founder of Newton’s Chess Club, and can always be found giving in-depth advice and guidance to the newer chess players.

Student participation at Newton’s Chess Club pushes everyone to level up and raise their game, as the standard is extremely high. We have students ranging in age from Year 8 all the way up to Year 12, which makes for a friendly, relaxed and diverse playing environment.

Chess is a game that enhances problem-solving and critical thinking skills of our students, which are key lifelong skills. In this age of technology, focus and strategy are key soft skills; our Chess club players all benefit from these abilities.

Strategy is extremely important in all aspects of our lives - in fact, at Newton Business School, our motto is Strategy Matters. Develop your strategic thinking here at Chess Club!

If you are interested in joining Chess Club, please speak to your care supervisor to obtain more details and the schedule.
