This is a cry for help.

Rome was one of the greatest empire on earth, from Iberia to Asia Minor, Rome spans the continent of Asia, Europe, and Africa. It left a long-lasting legacy still seen today. However, we are ignoring things that matter. How did the fall of this great empire affect my grades? Well, the answer might be not what you think.

Before we can understand why my grades dipped, we have to understand why Rome fell in the first place.

In 268, to save the Roman Empire from collapse, Emperor Diocletian decided to divide Rome into two sections to try and stabilize the empire. This empire is split into the Western Roman Empire and the Eastern Roman Empire, more commonly known as the Byzantine Empire. The splitting caused a clear division between the two empires. The West spoke Latin but the East spoke Greek, they have different governments, armies, and economies.

While the East prospered and its economy and military grew, the West declined. Plagued by barbarians and a failing economy, the empire cannot sustain itself. The problem is, the empire had an overreliance on slaves in their economy. Slaves are captured from new territory claimed from conquest. This conquest did not happen since they have to defend against the increasingly common barbarian attacks. To defend against these attacks, they need a standing army with professional soldiers in huge numbers. This requires funds, which the empire did not have. Anytime they had money, the money would go to the army to defend against barbarians. Eventually, due to a lack of funds and no slaves, the Roman economy collapse. This caused the army to downsize and loosen its requirements. The professional legionnaires are now being filled by mercenaries and barbarians. All while this was happening, Rome was losing territory. Eventually, due to the immense barbarian invasion and the total collapse of its political structure, emperor Romulus Augustulus, and the Senate sent the imperial insignia to the Byzantine emperor Zeno, effectively ending The Western Roman Empire.

Now that I explained the fall of the Roman Empire, let me link it to your grades. First off, the primary language of Rome was Latin. At one point, Rome controlled parts of southern England and spread their language there. The effects of this can be observed in modern English where words have Latin as their root word. An example of these words is agenda, obvious, and plausible. This can directly lead me to misspell these words in an exam, causing lower grades. The fall of the West is correlated to the rise of the East. The Byzantine Empire was prosperous and was filled with knowledge, hence when they fell, they fled west and along the way caused the Renaissance. This made science infinitely more complicated therefore reducing my grade and making me bother learning it. The fall of the Byzantine Empire was also disastrous for my grade, this made modern-day people become ironically or unironically become nationalist. This is between the Turks and the Greeks. While I have nothing to do with it, I enjoy watching the meltdown, taking time away from my studies.

So while the fall of Rome did not directly affect my grades, it did took time from me to write this article so if my grades tanked because I did not study, you probably know why dear reader.
