Q+A
Q, Why did you come and study at Newton Sixth Form?
A, I had just returned from Columbia in South America after leaving Thailand a few months earlier due to the authoritarian approach to controlling Covid and needing a breath of fresh air and freedom. While on my break I was able to reflect, I knew I wanted to return to the classroom after spending the last three to four years in educational management and having missed classroom interactions. I had several jobs with offers from other international schools but Newton stood out due to the unique concepts being applied to education.
Q, Why are you passionate about teaching?
A, I have been coaching and teaching since a young age (16) in both formal and informal settings in the UK. My initial step was sports coaching for local primary schools while studying college (M4) which led to working with my local education authority to deliver PE classes as part of primary school curricular hours. Seeing children grow in ability and confidence was a huge takeaway from this. Heading to University I had the opportunity to work for the university’s engagement program reaching out to more challenging groups using sports as an engagement and retention tool for students. This saw me going to rough inner-city schools, young offender institutes as well as other places. While there I saw that many students had been labelled by other teachers as troublemakers and this just wasn’t the case. Teachers just didn’t know how to engage them and motivate them. The labelling of students as having ADHD or being a troublemaker had put them in a group that was hard to break free of. After graduating I stepped up into the corporate world however much of my role was training and development of staff. I realised this was my passion but I was working with an age group where personal growth was harder to see. Moving to Thailand I knew what I wanted to do!
Q. Tell us something people don’t know about you?
A, I am an adventure sports enthusiast who enjoys trying new activities that give that adrenaline rush. When I lived in the cooler European climate you would in winter find me on a ski slope and in the summer find me on a yacht or dinghy racing others.
Hobbies and Interests:
One of the main reasons I moved to Asia was my passion to travel. Before moving here, I had been travelling Europe and Asia for about 8 months and used Bangkok as a real hub for the Asian parts of my travel. Bangkok’s quality and affordable travel links make it a great place to travel to greater Asia from. While I am not on the road, I enjoy team sports such as badminton and volleyball, coffee shops, and hunting down unique street food across BKK.
